Addressing America's Calcium Crisis
America finds itself in a calcium crisis today because consumers aren't drinking enough milk. Three out of four Americans don't get enough calcium in their diets, which may increase their risk for fractures and leave their bones unprotected against the crippling disease osteoporosis later in life.
Adequate calcium and vitamin D throughout life, as part of a well-balanced diet, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis, which currently affects 28 million Americans (one in five of whom are male). Drinking lowfat milk is one of the easiest and most efficient ways to increase calcium and vitamin D, which has been shown to reduce the chances of bone fractures. A review of 180 scientific studies found that 100% of the milk-related research demonstrated a bone health benefit - a track record nearly unheard of in the world of nutrition research. In one study, healthy men and women who increased daily calcium to 1,200 mg - the amount in four glasses of milk - reduced their risk of bone fractures by 72%. And milk's benefits don't stop with calcium - milk provides a great-tasting, convenient package of nine essential nutrients, including vitamin D, protein, potassium, vitamin A, phosphorus, riboflavin, vitamin B-12, and niacin.
Waging a Battle for America's Health
We're waging a battle for America's health by showing how lowfat milk is a better choice than less nutritious beverages like soft drinks, juice drinks and sports drinks. Kids now drink twice as much soda as milk, which may contribute to obesity and other health problems.
Nearly nine out of 10 women and almost seven out of 10 men don't get the recommended daily amount of calcium - 1,000 mg or about three glasses of milk. Kids aren't getting enough calcium either. Almost 90 percent of teenage girls are not consuming the calcium they need - at least 1,300 mg every day. The teen years are a critical bone-building time when nearly half of all bone is formed and about 15% of your adult height is added, and teens need calcium to help their bones be as strong as they can be.
Milk's role in a nutritious diet has long been established and lauded by the nutrition and science community, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Dietetic Association, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Osteoporosis Foundation, and many other reputable health organizations.
