Ana Ivanovic began playing tennis at the age of five years old. She made her pro debut on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Circuit in 2003. In 2004, Ivanovic finished in the top 100 at the age of just 16, making the biggest ranking jump (609 spots) of any player that year. She started the season winning her first 21 matches and three titles.

2005, her first full season on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, was a breakthrough year in Ivanovic's career, highlighted by a career-first Tour singles title at Canberra and her first Top 20 finish. She made debuts at all four Grand Slams' the Australian Open, the French Open (where she reached the quarter-finals), Wimbledon and the US Open. In 2006, Ivanovic experienced her second Top 20 finish and she clinched the US Open Series title.
